Changing the culture of responsible research assessment – ExPECT

The video explains how assessment of research and researchers has evolved over time, with peer review remaining central to scientific self-regulation and integrity. While metrics can support evaluation, they do not reliably capture the full impact or societal value of research, nor do they account for the diverse roles researchers play, such as teaching, mentoring, and
public engagement. Responsible researcher assessment requires a cultural shift: it must prioritise qualitative judgement, transparency, and fairness, ensuring researchers know how they are evaluated. Open science and diverse contributions should be recognised and valued.

CoARA ExPECT, supported by CoARA Boost funding, represents a collaborative initiative involving the University of Oulu, Ruhr University Bochum, and Tampere University. The Teaming project from Cascade Funding Call 1 actively advances CoARA's vision to reform researcher assessment practices. The video catalogue produced by the CoARA ExPECT project has been formally endorsed by the CoARA Steering Board and is available on the CoARA Collection: http://www.coara.org/collection
